But Sometimes
It is
Recent statistics reveal that
most instances of abuse do not occur in our schools or on the
playgrounds, but in the home. And, like it or not, laws have
been enacted that place upon certain individuals the obligation to
act as "First Reporters."
Clergy, teachers, doctors,
coaches, and yes, even yard mothers now have the legal duty as a
"first reporter" to report instances of suspected child abuse.
O.L.S. has already conducted training sessions for all faculty
members, CCD instructors and other staff in the matter of
recognizing and reporting reasonable suspicions of child abuse.
We have attempted to provide
guidance regarding the difference between signs of real abuse and
the signs of a normal childhood. And we have intentionally put
in place a series of steps to be taken that are intended to
eliminate any confusion between the two. But, when a
reasonable distinction cannot be made, our staff has been instructed
to opt in favor of the child and to report it.
This training will occur at the
beginning of each school year and all parents and guardians
interested will receive this vital information, if requested.
As part of the normal registration process at Notre Dame School, CCD
and confirmation programs, you will be asked to acknowledge your
awareness of the Parish Safeguard the Children program with your
signature.
